Been a long time 1password user as well as buying combo licenses and licenses for my wife and kid. Due to the lack of notification I only became aware of 1p7 recently and I missed all the promotional upgrade/standalone pricing. I guess as 1password 7 isn't compatible with Yosemite agilebits was smart enough to not tell me about the new release.

I never got an upgrade prompt or notification because I was running 1password6 on Yosemite until recently. Very happy with my stand-alone license setup because I have a custom syncing/backup strategy and want to use stand-alone/local vaults. The ambiguity makes it very hard to justify spending $50 when there are so many other things I can't afford already. I want to know (at least a minimum) of how long until 1Password 8 comes out, and if my licence will carry over or not, or if I get a discount. So at the very least, I want some guarantees of what I'm buying with 1Password.

$50 isn't cheap, and if I didn't buy 1Password, I could instead get, for example, 2x AAA games for my PS4 (when they're on sale) that I would have for life and would give hundreds of hours of gameplay. I am willing to pay one-off fees for apps, but I find 1Password so confusing in what I'm actually buying. But subscriptions are really just a way to take more money from you than you'd be willing to pay in one lump sum, and it leaves you with nothing if you ever cancel, so you're locked-in. I understand that the app receives updates, and if they were updates worth paying for I'd happily do so.

But I'm not subscribing to what's essentially a piece of software that just sits on my computer. I refuse to subscribe to anything apart from services of which I use the resources continually (like Dropbox, as I use their servers, or Spotify, as I continually download music). If you have any more questions about the features or security of 1Password accounts, let me know :) That makes your vaults useless to anyone but you whenever they're in transit or on our servers. Those two keys required to turn your data from "meaningless blobs" to your 1Password data never leave your device.

Your vaults are AES-256 bit encrypted by your Master Password with PBKDF2 key derivation to prevent brute forcing, and now there's the benefit of the Secret Key also encrypting your data.
